Digital Age Is Here, Like It Or Not

Digital Age Is Here, Like It Or Not

My husband refused to enter the 21st century. I had to drag him in kicking and screaming. He isn’t one for computers or cellphones, and rarely uses the Internet. Give him a shack in the woods with a wood-stove and a radio and he’s happy, but myself and roughly 84% of the rest of Canada can’t get enough of the electronic age, or, more precisely, digital media.
Along with laptops, cellphones and the Internet, digital media has become an all-consuming entity. Promises of faster internet speeds, sleeker gear and more gigs for storage, not to mention access to just about anything you ever want at the click of a mouse, has transformed many of us into tech addicts starving for the latest download, patch, or blog that might stave off our craving.
What’s wrong with that? Personally, I find it very convenient to pay bills or shop online, and now that I have a faster internet connection, I’m doing a lot more. I’m on a few social networks — I find them a great way to keep tabs on friends and family — and yes, I am one of those people who checks their e-mail several times a day.
While we are a far cry from plugging anything into the back of our necks The Matrix style, technology is growing exponentially. Is this the outlook for the future? Receiving all our information at the touch of a button? It may seem impersonal and sterile, but the digital age is here, my friends, and it’s kicking butts and taking names.
