You get to meet all the ex-pats who are running from or to something, and who are all borderline candidates for the DMS-IV. It tugs your funny bone and heart strings throughout. LIFE AS A HOUSE Former brothel inspires novel By Margaret Bikman The Bellingham Herald

Interview

Q:What led up to your writing of The Bluebird House?
In 1990 I moved to Helena, Montana, to work as a landscape architect for the Helena National Forest. On one nice day in May I bought a collection of old buildings in a ghost town named Rimini – all for the price of a used car. With help from a carpenter I set about renovating one of the buildings, a former brothel.
Q:Why did you write the book?
I had several strange dreams while living in the brothel. When I told the carpenter, also a Rimini resident, about one dream, in which a shooting takes place behind the brothel next to the creek, his eyes got real big and he said, “That actually happened here.” Slowly a story took shape in my mind. I’d wanted to write fiction, and once this idea for a novel came to me it was like a crazy ex-lover stalking me.
Q:How did you come up with the title?
The old building looked something like a bluebird house, with its rustic barn board construction. This brothel, after all, was in an old mining camp and the architecture wasn’t elegant like, say, The Dumas in Butte, Montana. And the former madam held a fondness for bluebirds. From what her journal said, I believe they represented happiness and freedom to her.
“Folks who mess about with boats should enjoy this book about a small town girl from land-locked Idaho (who had only viewed sailboats from a distance) who signs on as First Mate to sail the ocean blue with her husband Tom. They train for a dream trip to the Caribbean by sailing the challenging waters off Western Washington. ” ~ Susan J. Erickson, Amazon Reviews
