What I Love About Books

From Barbar Vey, 3/29/2012, Publishers Weekly

The other day I wrote what bugs me about books, so today I thought I’d write about what I love about books.

1. I love how they make me feel. (Thanks romance)
2. I love how most of the characters become like someone I’d want to hang around with.
3. I love imagining myself living in different times and places.
4. I love figuring out puzzles and who done it.
5. I love picturing myself in the clothing of the time.
6. I love knowing the secrets that the characters know.
7. I love the adventures I’d never get to experience in my real life.
8. I love being so engrossed that I don’t hear anything else around me.
9. I love knowing that others enjoy the same thing I do so we can discuss it.
10. I love to laugh, cry and yes, sometimes sing along with the characters.
This is my love letter to all the authors out there who have shared their imaginations and stories with me so I can escape, for a little while, into wondrous worlds.
Bottom Line: The heck with Calgon. Books…take me away…

Book Talk: Deborah Batterman author of Shoes Hair Nails: Laughter and Sexology Mix that Entertains

SHOES HAIR NAILS“Deborah’s collection of eclectic, honest, thought-provoking stories is part of the “treasured” area of my bookshelves–the special books that may be shared, but always returned, and never relegated to the “give-away” stack.” ~ B. Minor, Amazon Reviews
Hello Digital Book Today readers. Today we are featuring a collection of stories “written with wry humor and tenderness, fresh language and captivating characters, illuminate the many ways we inhabit this world”. Shoe Hair Nails by Deborah Batterman has been rated 4.5 stars. Shoe Hair Nails is collection of 11 stories featuring a wide cast of characters and engrossing stories that Deborah describes beautifully to her reader. Shoe Hair Nails will not disappoint the reader.

An intricately woven work of stunning depth. . . . I raved about it to several girlfriends and even my mother. It has certainly been a while since I was touched by such a powerful collection.“ ~ Mercedes Yardley, A Broken Laptop

Shoe Hair Nails is one of those collections whose deceptively simple title sets the reader up for one-dimensional stories about say, fashion… or a manual on personal maintenance. Reader, beware. Each story begins simply enough, then sideswipes us with heart-rending takes on morality, mortality, and all the epic mishaps in-between.” ~ Dave Port, Amazon Reviews

Book Description: The settings of these stories – 1980s New York City, 1950s Brooklyn, Las Vegas, an exurban town post-9/11 – are as diverse as the rich palette of characters drawn with heart, humor, and sensuality. With a sharp sense of the telling detail, Deborah Batterman weaves narratives around the everyday symbols in our world and their resonance in our lives. … Read more on Amazon.

Author Interview: Conquering Your Goliaths by Kathryn Elizabeth Jones

Conquering Your Goliaths: A Parable of the Five StonesOur interview today is with Kathryn Elizabeth Jones the author of Conquering Your Goliaths: A Parable of the Five Stones. Her book is rated 4.7 stars on 7 reviews. Before we get to our interview with Kathryn Elizabeth Jones, here is a brief description of Conquering Your Goliaths: David gathered 5 smooth stones to meet and defeat Goliath. What did these stones represent and how can you use them to conquer Goliaths in your own personal quests? Ms. Virginia Bean will show you how.
Travel with her on her own personal journey. See what she does. Learn how she grows. Discover what she becomes. “Conquering your Goliaths—A Parable of the Five Stones” is for anyone desiring to travel beyond mediocrity, pain and fear. Learn of the great power within you, a power given to you from God, a power that must ultimately be unleashed to conquer the Goliaths in your own life. Come to an even deeper understanding of God and what he wants for you. Come…

Interview with Kathryn Elizabeth Jones

1. What makes “Conquering Your Goliaths—A Parable of the Five Stones,” different from other self-help books out there? There are many self-help books that direct a reader to improve their life or gain a closer relationship with God, far fewer that teach by fiction in a way that doesn’t preach, but allows the reader to consider his/her life and make corrections as he/she chooses.
2. What specific themes did you emphasize throughout the novel? The five stones are a good starting point: Listening to God, Trusting in him, having Optimism in your life and Tenacity, especially when things get difficult. Constancy in God throughout your life keeps you on that straight and narrow path; it also increases your self-esteem and your ability to forgive yourself and others.
3. To what extent do the characters in “Conquering Your Goliaths” remind you of yourself or someone you know? Ms. Virginia Bean may be a fictional character, but she’s a lot like me. She has some of the same quirks, the same needs, the same desires for her life. Though a parable, “Conquering Your Goliaths,” is more than a feel good story; it’s a story that can initiate change in an individual. A few writers have told me that they’ve gathered their own five stones to help them to remember what they’ve read—this tells me that they are living beyond the story.
4. How do your characters change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events trigger such changes? Ms. Virginia Bean doesn’t realize that she can not only talk to God, but that he actually hears her and answers her prayers. She doesn’t at first see her potential; but God does.
5. In what ways do the events in the book reveal evidence of your world view? I believe in God and all that can be accomplished through not only believing in him but ACTING on what I believe. Because Virginia acted on what she’d learned, she was able to grow stronger spiritually. She was able to help others come to God. I know I can help others do the same thing.
6. Did writing certain parts of the book make you uncomfortable? If so, why did you feel that way? Did this lead to a new understanding or awareness of some aspect of your life you might not have thought about before? Yes. So much of writing is coming to a deeper awareness of yourself, others or the world. For example, it’s hard to talk about making mistakes. There were times I wanted to hold back, not say it all, but skimming across the surface of life leaves out all the joy that can be found underneath the ocean.
7. Was there a basis for your story? A previous experience? Something else? One day my husband received an email from his nephew who is serving a mission for our church. His nephew spoke about how great it would be to read a book about David and Goliath and the five smooth stones David collected to meet the Goliath in his life. My husband told me about the email and the story of “Conquering Your Goliaths” was born.
8. What research did you have to perform to back up your story? Any research which really opened your eyes or gave you new respect for a topic or profession? I did quite a bit of research on the Bible story itself, along with additional words like “winepress” and “Gath,” (the area where Goliath lived). I found that these key words, and others, gave greater depth and understanding to the story.
9. What is your method for writing a book? A certain amount of hours every day? A certain routine? I write every day, even if it’s only my blog. I don’t have a specific time to write, but I make sure I get the time in. My new business, “Idea Creations,” keeps me pretty busy, too. I mentor new writers, help with editing issues, and give positive support to writers whenever I can.

Why Would An Author Give Their Book Away Free?

My Temporary LifeOne of the reasons our readers visit Digital Book Today and our complimentary site The Top 100 Best Free Kindle Books List is to take advantage of books by Indie authors that are free for a day or two. Why would an author give the fruits of their craft away for free? Why are samples given away at the grocery store? Why does a little box of cereal or soap sometimes come in the plastic bag that your Sunday paper is delivered in?

They are all a form of advertising. The free book (on Amazon) is currently the best form of advertising and marketing that is available to the Indie author. This is why an author would give their book away for free.

Below is a copy of a blog post from Martin Crosbie author of My Temporary Life which was featured on The Top 100 Best Free Kindle Books List (Feb 10-12) while it was free. The post below describes what happened during and after when he gave away My Temporary Life (4.7 stars on 69 reviews). Remember, if you read and like a free book, to give it a book review as payback to the author.

PIRATES, KARMA, AND DROPPING OUT OF THE RACE by Martin Crosbie
I had to stop. I couldn’t go any farther. I was 10 kilometres into a 26 kilometre run, in training for a full-marathon in May, and I stopped. My body was fine, I had no aches and pains, and I’d run a half-marathon the week before with no problems, but I stopped. It didn’t feel good. I was nauseous and had a headache and felt overwhelmed, really overwhelmed. There aren’t many things I’ve stopped, but I did, I stopped running and headed home.

In the last three weeks there have been more changes and personal accomplishments than I ever could have imagined happening. First of all, “My Temporary Life,” became available as a free download on Feb 10-12, in an Amazon promotion. The idea is that folks download it for free and then with the momentum that has built, when it becomes a paid download on the fourth day, it sells. Well, to say that it worked is an understatement, so, I’ll say it this way-IT WORKED! It became the most downloaded ebook in North America for one day, a couple of Sundays ago.
“My Temporary Life,” built up momentum like a rocket taking off, there was nothing gradual about it at all. By the second day, it was floating between second and third place overall in free downloads. On the third day, Sunday Feb 12th, well you know what happened, because you heard me. You heard me screaming. Yep, doesn’t matter where you were, you probably heard me. We hit #1 overall. I sat in stunned silence for a moment and then ran around my empty house screaming. Spock, the cat, is still recovering. He’d never seen my ultra-happy dance before. It was a very proud moment, and we stayed there from 10 AM Sunday morning until 1 AM the next morning, and I know that, because I checked the rankings on my computer or phone every four minutes throughout the day. Did I mention that it was a proud moment?

“On a scale of 1-10, I’d say this is a strong 9. This is a book I would definitely recommend to fans of the fantasy genre, but also anyone who enjoys a story about a bond between two people who aren’t blood relations, but are family nonetheless.” ~ Mandy, Amazon Book Reviews

Book Description: Little Tavera is a half-elf child in a land of humans, an outsider dragged from bad situation to worse–until Derk whisks her away and adopts her as his own. Tavera soon finds out her new Pa is a master thief, a member of an elite group of professional scoundrels called the Cup of Cream. They make their money that way, sure, but thievery is as necessary as any other profession in the Valley of Ten Crescents; it balances society. To Derk’s–and her own–delight, Tavera grows into a natural thief and works her way toward membership in the Cup. Joining would finally give her some place where she belongs, and it would please the Pa she loves so much. But being a thief means being only one step ahead of the law.
