Author Interview #146: What Kills Me by Wynne Channing

What Kills MeOur interview today is with award-winning journalist and young adult novelist Wynne Channing. She is the author of the top-rated bestseller (#5 in occult, September) What Kills Me. What Kills Me won the reader’s choice award at the inaugural Blogger Book Fair 2011. A brief book description before we get to the interview: An ancient prophecy warns of a girl destined to cause the extinction of the vampire race. So when 17-year-old Axelia falls into a sacred well filled with blood and emerges a vampire, the immortal empire believes she is this legendary destroyer. Hunted by soldiers and mercenaries, Axelia and her reluctant ally, the vampire bladesmith Lucas, must battle to survive. How will she convince the empire that she is just an innocent teenager-turned bloodsucker and not a creature of destruction? And if she cannot, can a vampire who is afraid of bugs summon the courage to fight a nation of immortals?

Interview with Wynne Channing

1. What specific themes did you want to emphasize throughout the novel?
What Kills Me is a supernatural adventure about bravery and survival. Sometimes you have no control over bad things that happen. But you can be strong and endure.
2. Do the characters seem real and believable? Can you relate to their predicaments? To what extent do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?
I believe all authors mine their own lives and personalities for inspiration. Definitely, my heroine, Zee is like me. While I’ve never been hunted to the death by every vampire in the world, we’ve had similar upbringings. We both share a self-deprecating sense of humor, and an openness with strangers. Our fathers address themselves in the third person and our best friends rescued us from bullies. We both talk when we’re nervous, and take time falling in love. But we are also very different. I’m a lot more sarcastic and pessimistic. (The coins in my swear jar could buy a car.) And I’m definitely not as brave.
3. How do characters change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events trigger such changes?
Zee’s journey in the novel is epic. She goes from being a naive 17-year-old exchange student to becoming a “monster.” Not only is Zee hurting from the loss of her family and her old life, but she must struggle to define herself in this dangerous new world. “Was I a vampire wearing an Axelia mask?” She asks herself at one point. But it is her humanity that gives her the strength to fight back.
4. In what ways do the events in the books reveal evidence of your world view?
As a national newspaper reporter, I’ve had the fortune of meeting a lot of amazing people who’ve done and endured incredible things. That informs my writing. Readers have told me that there is a realism to What Kills Me, which is gratifying because so many parts of it are borrowed from real life. For example, the words that are spoken when my heroine Zee is captured by the vampire empire, are the ones police used after bringing down a notorious serial killer. And the heroism portrayed in my story was inspired by the courage of normal people doing extraordinary things.

Perfection Unleashed (Book 1 of the Double Helix series)Perfection is what we strive for, and genetics may allow us to attain it. Perfection Unleashed is a distant future science fiction novel from Jade Kerrion, following Danyael Sabre, an alpha empath trying to piece together his life among the Genetic revolution, which is rapidly changing humanity, and may now be sending them to war. Perfection Unleashed asks many questions of human ethical biology and nature, solidly recommended reading. ~ Susan Bethany, Midwest Book Review (Nov 2012)

Hello Digital Book Today readers. The Book Buzz segment today features the science fiction/fantasy series award-winning Perfection Unleashed (Bk #1 of the Double Helix series) by Jade Kerrion. Winner of the Royal Palm Literary Awards 2011, finalist for the Next Generation Indie Awards 2012, and Honorable Mention Hollywood Book Festival 2012. Perfection Unleashed (4.1 stars, 35 reviews) has been called “a breakout piece of science fiction”. If you love the science fiction (dystopian), fantasy, or urban fantasy genres, then you will enjoy this series. This is an “intelligently written” science fiction novel the leaves out the wormholes, starships, and photon torpedoes of Star Trek fame. Go ahead and give Perfection Unleashed a try. It is on sale for $0.99 until 3/1/2013. The other books in this series are: Perfect Betrayal and Perfect Weapon.

“It is not often that I read a book that has truly broken new ground. So it was with great pleasure that I read Perfection Unleashed. Ms. Kerrion has created a new and unique story which is both fascinating and compelling.” ~ Jonathan B, Amazon Review

“If you enjoyed watching Alphas and Heroes, or you’re into comic books, then chances are you will enjoy this. Perfection Unleashed follows the story of a group of superhumans, set in an alternate reality were mutants, clones and human derivatives are struggling to find acceptance amongst society. ~ Sharon, Amazon Review

Book Description: What would you do if you came face-to-face with perfection, and it looked just like you? Two men, one face. One man seeks to embrace destiny, the other to escape it. Danyael Sabre spent sixteen years clawing out of the ruins of his childhood and finally has everything he wanted–a career, a home, and a trusted friend. To hold on to them, he keeps his head down and plays by the rules. An alpha empath, he is powerful in a world transformed by the Genetic Revolution, yet his experience has taught him to avoid attention.

When the perfect human being, Galahad, escapes from Pioneer Laboratories, the illusory peace between humans and their derivatives–the in vitros, clones, and mutants–collapses into social upheaval. The abominations, deformed and distorted mirrors of humanity, created unintentionally in Pioneer Lab’s search for perfection, descend upon Washington D.C. The first era of the Genetic Revolution was peaceful. The second is headed for open war. Although the genetic future of the human race pivots on Galahad, Danyael does not feel compelled to get involved and risk his cover of anonymity, until he finds out that the perfect human being looks just like him.

Using Hypnosis To Overcome Issues & To Achieve Success

Traveling To Parallel UniversesOur guest blog post comes from Trish LeSage author of Traveling To Parallel Universes.

Using Hypnosis To Overcome Issues & To Achieve Success

Although many people have misconceptions about Hypnosis, it is actually a very beneficial tool that can be used to overcome challenges and issues, and it can even be used to achieve success. It has been proven to be highly successful in many areas including medical issues, relaxation, and self-improvement to name only a few.
According to Certified Hypnotherapist, Heather Williams, the following are some common misconceptions about Hypnosis:
1. It is often thought that Hypnosis is sleep, because your eyes are closed during a Hypnosis session. However, Hypnosis is not sleep. You are awake during Hypnosis. Your mind is actually in a heightened state of awareness during Hypnosis. In fact, you are able to access information from your subconscious mind and your higher mind through Hypnosis that you generally do not have access to.
2. People often fear that they might not be able to awaken from Hypnosis. Since you are not asleep during Hypnosis, there is nothing to awaken from. Furthermore, there has never been a documented case of someone who has not come out of Hypnosis.
3. It is often thought that Hypnosis is dangerous and can harm your mind. Hypnosis is similar to when you are watching a movie and are engrossed in it or when you are engrossed in a book that you are reading. We go into a similar state several times throughout the day naturally. It actually strengthens your mind and concentration.
4. People often think that Hypnosis is related to the occult and dark arts. Hypnosis is actually a science that is practiced by many reputable professions. Its use in medicine was approved by the British Medical Association in 1955 and by the American Medical Association in 1958. It is also approved and endorsed by the American Dental Association and the American Psychological Association.
5. People often think that they cannot be hypnotized. However, there are only 4 types of people who cannot be hypnotized, and they are:
- Mentally challenged people
- Small children with short attention spans
- People who are under the influence of alcohol
- People who think that they cannot be hypnotized or do not want to be hypnotized.
According to Clinical Care Network in Warren, Michigan, the following are some of the most common issues that Hypnosis has been successfully used for:

Photo Phanatics

EMBRACEDOur guest post today is from Darlene Jones author of several books including Embraced.

Photo Phanatics

In Nairobi I join five other tourists, all of us keyed up and anxious to begin our first safari. I climb into the land cruiser and compete for space with backpacks and telephoto lenses so big they obscenely dwarf the cameras attached to them. Not an auspicious start, I think.
I have my camera with me, of course. I even take a picture or two. I photograph the big five, the little five, and a number of fives in between. I take a picture of our guide, a few of the landscape and a couple of our luxury tent camp.
My fellow safarians are not so casual about their picture taking. Three minutes into the first game drive the conversation goes something like this:
“How many gigs have you got?”
“Four. You?”
“Me too. I brought four cards with me. I hope that’ll be enough. I might have to buy more.”
Now where in the Serengeti, I wonder, will we find a store selling gigs. I cradle my little Canon on my lap, protective of the runt of the litter.
The conversation switches to zoom power. I know I’ve got a one-gig card and that I can zoom. But zoom power? I glance down at baby Canon and see 4X. That must be it. My relief is shattered when I hear numbers like 14, 20, 300. 300?
“Zebras on the left,” someone shouts. Click, click, click go the cameras. The zebras begin to move away. Click, click, click. Just how many pictures of zebra bums does one need?
“Sawa sawa?” the driver asks.
“Sawa sawa,” we say. The signal to move on.
“What’s that?”
“Where?”
“Over there at two o’clock. By that different-colored grass.” Click, click, click.
“There. Do you see it?” Click, click, click.
“A tree stump,” says the driver.
We click and snap our way through Kenya andTanzania.
“Road kill.” Click, click, click.
“Airplane.” Click, click, click.

Bikers writing books? Good books? Really? Yes, it’s true!

The Libertines Motorcycle Club: Deception and BetrayalOur guest post is by Max. L. Billington author of The Libertines Motorcycle Club series.

Bikers writing books? Good books? Really? Yes, it’s true!

Let’s try a little word association. What comes to mind when I say “BIKER?” Well, most would probably answer with a stereotypical description of a large, uneducated, bearded man riding a Harley-Davidson and raising all kinds of hell while not being able to sign his name on his paperwork with his parole officer.
Believe it or not, there are “bikers” out there who are authors, and fiction authors at that. Some names you probably would recognize from television or the media such as Sonny Barger who has just finished up filming a movie based off of his latest book or Edward Winterhalder, who just released his 4th book in his “Biker’s Stories” series. Both of these guys have written several books, some fiction and some non-fiction, and are all great reads.
Sure, there are plenty of tell-all books written by folks who have supposedly “infiltrated outlaw biker gangs” but I wouldn’t go so far as to call them biker authors, and it’s always the same old rehashed story, over and over and over.
Then you have the lesser known biker authors, and I don’t mean that in a condescending way, but these guys aren’t exactly household names. Guys such as Iain Parke who has authored a series of three books entitled “The Brethern Trilogy” which have received great reviews on Amazon.com.
So, the next time you see a biker riding down the road, don’t always assume he’s a criminal, he could actually be an author!
Max L. Billington is the author of “The Libertines Motorcycle Club” series currently available at Amazon.com.

A New Year’s Eve Party Idea – Spoon Bending

How to Host a Spoon-Bending Party

In the fall of 1999, I went to see Uri Geller give a talk at a Learning Annex class in San Francisco. I was delighted when Uri demonstrated how he bends spoons with one of the spoons I had hopefully brought along with me! My spoon was a solid one, stamped with the words “ONEIDACRAFT STAINLESS” on the back side of the handle. There was nothing unusual or weak about this spoon, and although I didn’t attempt to bend it forcibly, it seemed quite sturdy to me.
Uri held my spoon up in front of him as he stood facing the audience of some hundred people in the room, holding my spoon in one hand by the cup part as he gently stroked the UPPER side of the handle with his free hand. He asked all of us in the audience to shout “BEND!” at the spoon, and to visualize the spoon bending. We did this, and within seconds, we could see the spoon’s handle beginning to move UPWARDS towards Uri’s still gently moving hand!
Uri also sprouted some seeds in the palm of his hand, which grew at an astonishing rate with little green tendrils popping out of the seeds within moments of the audience shouting, “GROW!”
These sights were so inspirational that I decided to organize a small spoon bending party at my home, to see if we could bend a few spoons.
(1) Invite Friends
The first step in hosting a spoon bending party is to decide who you’ll invite. Make sure you invite people you truly love to have around, and people who will at least be open-minded about the idea of bending spoons! I invited several close friends and their children. I’d heard that children are often more open to the experience of bending spoons, and have an easier time achieving good results. Be sure to practice bending spoons away from judgemental people first. This feat takes an open mind and good friends to achieve, and isn’t something that can be taught from any middle school lesson plans or books, it just takes practice and time.
(2) Create a Noisy, Festive Mood

Diana Layne delivers all the elements of a classic romantic suspense–fast pace, a layered and twisty plot, memorable characters and the perfect balance of sensuality. ~ Linda Castillo, New York Times bestselling author of Breaking Silence

Book Description: Most good daughters would say they owe their fathers everything. Marisa Peruzzo, Mafia princess, would. She owed him for killing her fiancé. She owed him for destroying her mother. She owed him for chaining her to the ‘family business’. And she owed him for taking away her lifelong friend. Payback’s a bitch.

FBI meets Mafia Princess: Dave sat up straighter when she entered the bar. Sandro had promised the contact would have useful information and be immediately recognizable, but he never specified male or female. Was this his informant? Carlo Peruzzo’s daughter. The Mafia princess herself. Her gaze scanned the room until she saw him. Though her lips were pressed in a straight line, a sparkle flashed in her eyes as if she knew just how she had shocked him.Dave realized his heart rate had kicked up a few notches when their eyes had locked. Book Buzz: The Folks at Fifty-Eight – A Cold War Spy Novel

The Folks at Fifty-EightI am a fan of this genre and a WWII history buff, so I loved this book. The author did his home work not only to render the real events accurately but deepen and enrich it with his own invisible twists and speculations. You really can’t tell where the real history ends and the fiction begins. Its some of the best research I have seen from this era. ~ Amuzed2Pieces, Amazon Review

Hello Digital Book Today readers. The Book Buzz segment today features The Folks at Fifty-Eight an entertaining spy novel by Michael Patrick Clark. This “delicious spy novel, bold and graphic” takes place at the start of the cold war after WWII and is rated 4.3 on 24 reviews. The author has done a splendid job in weaving his plot into a well researched historical time period. The story of The Folks at Fifty-Eight is told in the popular alternate chapter character format. I think this concept works great especially in a good vs evil thriller. If you enjoy the spy, historical fiction, WWII history, or the cold war genres, then you will surely enjoy The Folks at Fifty-Eight.

“A touch of LeCarre, a dash of Ludlum.” ~ Linda A. Root, Amazon Review
“A very well written thriller with lots of racy sex!! Thoroughly enjoyed it, now my husband is going to read it as well. ~ Lucinda, Amazan Review

Book Description: Gerald Hammond is the exception to the rule; an honourable spy, whose lofty principles have brought him nothing but loneliness and isolation. Catherine Schmidt is the stunning young daughter of an assassinated spymaster, whose murderous quest for vengeance has left her at the mercy of the infamous Head of Soviet State Security. On a covert operation, in Soviet-occupied Germany, Hammond has no knowledge of the unseen forces that sponsor and oppose his mission. He only knows that he must somehow save her to save himself, but, as ever-more disturbing revelations come to light, begins to wonder which poses the greater threat; the enemy he runs from, or the friend he runs to?

Set against a factual background of government conspiracy, and one of the most audacious espionage coups in history, the The Folks at Fifty-Eight is a beautifully-paced tale of seduction, betrayal, blackmail, and murder that blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction. Read more on Amazon.

Author Interview #145: Terminal Value by Thomas Waite

Terminal ValueOur interview today is with Thomas Waite the author of Terminal Value (4.8 stars, 44 reviews). Before we get to the interview a brief book description: “Be careful what you wish for.” That’s a warning Dylan Johnson should have listened to. When his mobile tech company is bought out by Mantric Technology, a red-hot firm about to go public, it seems like a dream come true for the young entrepreneur and his partners.

But the closer they get to payout, the more uncertain Dylan becomes. Something doesn’t feel right. When his best friend and chief technology officer is found dead on what should have been their night of triumph, Dylan is determined to find out what happened. But asking questions plunges him into a digital web of deceit and betrayal that will shake everything he thought he knew… Read more on Amazon.

Interview with Thomas Waite

What was unique about the setting of the book and how did it enhance or take away from the story?
I believe the setting of a novel is critical, particularly for a mystery or thriller. After all, in addition to providing details that enrich the story, the setting can actually assist, or impede, an investigation. Choosing a familiar setting is usually a good idea for a mystery or a thriller because it should directly influence the characters and the plot.

When I started writing Terminal Value, I deliberately chose Boston and New York City because I have lived in both locations and I know the cities well. Sure, you can do research, look at maps, and even read guidebooks, but there is no substitution for experience. If you have lived in a city, you know its character, the local customs, and the weather. For example, in my novel, I describe a “classic Nor’easter” and not only how these storms form, but also how they feel, and what the aftermath looks and smells like. I have also spent time with people in Boston and New York, and they talk, act, and think differently. If I were to have set my novel in Little Rock, Arkansas, it almost surely would have irritated people who live there and they would have quickly discerned that I really didn’t understand them or where they live.

At a more detailed level there are sub-settings – streets, parks, offices, police stations, restaurants – that have their own vibes and traditions beyond the place where they are situated. In the case of Terminal Value, I visited all of these sub-settings (except, of course, the offices of the fictional companies, but even those were based on other companies I was familiar with). In the opening of the novel, Dylan, the protagonist, leaves his condominium in the Back Bay section of Boston, drives by the Public Garden, down a street, across a bridge, to the office of his start-up, and takes an old elevator and enters the office. I drove this route myself, and describe various sights and sounds along the way that are both authentic and “educate” the reader about the environment.

Here’s an excerpt to illustrate my point: “Rush-hour traffic seemed unusually heavy for a cold January morning. Dylan glanced out through the frosty window at the Public Garden Lagoon. In the summer, swan boats and tourists filled the park. Now it was empty of water and people—a sure sign of a prolonged winter. He and his friend Tony had discussed the mobile computing revolution during many strolls through the garden.”

The importance of setting doesn’t end there. A good writer will develop their characters by deliberately describing elements that build both an image and understanding of the characters in the reader’s mind. Why does one character drive a certain kind of car while another drives a different car? Why does one person have a messy office and another a pristinely organized office? What is it that upsets or stresses a character – heavy traffic, noisy office mates, certain smells – and what does it tell the reader about that character?
Setting is more than just place. It is also time. In Terminal Value, there is a certain rhythm in the novel that reflects the changing seasons in Boston. Settings in my novel include a raging winter snowstorm and an abnormally warm, foggy spring night. These are important because they can lead to a sense of gloom, tension, joy, and so forth that is important to the storyline itself.

The Daily Shift: It's Not What You Think. It's Better Than That (The Shift Series)The Daily Shift: It’s Not What You Think. It’s Better Than That by Beca Lewis. Does your life keep going on the same way, sometimes getting a little better, but not really fulfilling your dreams? Or, perhaps in spite of all your best efforts, life is getting harder. To change your life, you try many ideas about how to fix it. Some work for a brief time, others don’t work at all. We all know that perception is reality. This means that in order for life to change for the better, permanently, our perception has to expand into a different way of thinking. We know that in order to change our life, we must think differently. Good shifts happen, because we shift our behavior and habits. However, that isn’t enough, because we can only change within, and what, we currently perceive of as reality.
Fleeing The JurisdictionFleeing The Jurisdiction by Gerald Hansen. It’s danger on the high seas for the Barnetts, but will it come from the authorities, Mother Nature or family Flood? In Wisconsin six years ago, Ursula Barnett accidentally defrauded her local church of thousands. The statute of limitations is inching closer, and the police are circling in. Panicked, Ursula books herself and her American family passage on a budget centennial Titanic cruise, hoping to ride out the investigation and embark a woman redeemed. But lurking amongst the leaky walls of the Queen of Crabs is a danger worse than disgruntled, poorly-paid staff, bad food and terrifying onshore excursions: her Irish family, still resentful of the Barnett’s lottery win years earlier.

Hello Digital Book Today readers. Today our book buzz segment is featuring Kirkus MacGowan’s first book and Amazon best seller The Fall of Billy Hitchings.
