“Wonderful “Gum Shoe” reporter in post depression “who done it?”” ~ Studio Su, Amazon Review

“I’ll say it up front – I really enjoyed The Storm Killer. It had everything a good crime drama should have. There were murders, frame-ups, good cops and bad cops, treachery, and a bit of romance.” ~ J. Chambers, Amazon Review

Book Description: Time: 1935. Place: New York City. Crime beat reporter Jim Locke gets sucked into a quagmire of death, deceit, and danger when his actress sister is murdered – and he becomes the prime suspect. When he uncovers a pattern of similar murders, he is convinced that a serial killer is on the loose. But the police aren’t buying it, and it’s up to Jim to stop the madman. The hunt takes him from the grimy streets and smoke-filled bars of Manhattan to deceptively laid-back Key West, just as a killer storm bears down on the island. THE STORM KILLER has it all: hard-boiled narrative, gripping suspense, period detail, an unlikely hero battling his inner demons, and a stunning conclusion that you won’t see coming. Highly recommended!–Miriam Auerbach, author of Dirty Harriet Rides Again Read more on Amazon.

Author Interview #155: Love at Absolute Zero by Christopher Meeks

Love at Absolute ZeroOur interview today is with Christopher Meeks author of Love at Absolute Zero (4.2 stars, 32 reviews). Before we get to the interview a brief book description: Love At Absolute Zero is a comic romance about Gunnar Gunderson, a 32-year-old star physicist at the University of Wisconsin who’s determined to meet his soul mate within three days using the Scientific Method. As he channels his inner salmon for speed dating, he accidentally steps on the toes of a visiting Danish schoolteacher–and his life turns upside down.

Interview with Christopher Meeks

Kirkus Reviews, the publishing industry paper, had you write for them a piece called “How I Did It”—how you became a successful indie fiction writer. Do you have the Lamborghini in the garage now? Do you get the best seat at Musso and Frank’s in Hollywood? What does success feel like?
I drive a Hyndai and stand in line at The Oinkster. The word “rich” and “writer” rarely go together in the same way “rich” and “educator” don’t. If you’re out to be wealthy, try a different field, say dentistry.
I’m successful in that people read my books and sometimes write me. I deeply pleased and remain forever thrilled, too, that my two collections of short stories, The Middle-Aged Man and the Sea and Months and Seasons, received such great critical notice when they first came out. After all, I’d been a book reviewer for two newspapers for a few years and a theatre reviewer for Daily Variety for eight, so I’d been on the on the other side. Many of my fellow reviewers were ruthless. Now I was the creator. I didn’t know how I’d fare. All I aimed to do was write the truth as I knew it. It worked.
The publishing part, though, took a lot more work than I expected. When my agent wouldn’t send out my short story collection—“Only novels make money,” he said—a friend convinced me to start my own publishing company. After all, he had worked with me at Prelude Press when I was the senior editor there in the eighties. My friend Daniel was a book designer and said he’d design my first covers for free, so I took the leap.
This was in 2005, before eBooks but just as print-on-demand first gained a toehold. My little company, White Whisker Books, used print-on-demand, and everything else I did was the way we’d done it at Prelude Press, including my hiring a freelance editor and sending out physical copies to reviewers. My first book went out in 2006.
My first review for my first book, The Middle-Aged Man and the Sea, was in the Los Angeles Times. Later that summer, Entertainment Weekly mentioned it. It was beginner’s luck—but with purpose and a plan behind it.
When my agent found enthusiastic editors for my novel Love at Absolute Zero, but the marketing departments said no, I had White Whisker publish it after my first novel, The Brightest Moon of the Century. The critical response has been fabulous for my novels, too. Now I’m publishing a couple of other writers.

Why other writers?
Because I’m naïve and want to do good things. I’m publishing three great writers right now, E. Van Lowe, David Scott Milton, and Shelly Lowenkopf. I knew them, they’ve all been published previously, and came to me to get help in this new publishing environment. We’re finding our way together. We’re Lewis and Clark and Clark and Clark.

Love and Relativity – A Contemporary Romance Runaway Hit – 4.8 Stars on 35 Reviews

Love and Relativity“Yeah, Jackson’s a playboy, and Emma completely changes him. But that’s about the only thing that makes this sound the same as every other romance out there. Trust me, it’s not. Rachael Wade handles it completely different and I was thrilled at the direction of the story and where it ended.” ~ Arijana K., Amazon Reviews

Hello Digital Book Today readers. The Book Buzz segment today features another outstanding book from author Rachael Wade. Love and Relativity is a stand-alone title but coordinates with Rachael’s popular Preservation Series. Love and Relativity is a contemporary romance that has an excellent rating of 4.8 stars on 35 reviews. We just love some of the reviewers comments for Love and Relativity including “This book just got thrown into my favorites pile.” and “If you love a beautiful story that is full of angst, tons of emotion, romance, steamy HOT moments, supportive friends, a resilient leading lady, and an amazing leading guy named Jackson who is up there on my book boyfriend list for sure, you must read this book.” Finally the takeaway quote from the book that is repeated in many reviews ”There’s nothing left of me, because you have it all.” We are sure that Love and Relativity will not disappoint.

“Definitely add this book to your “To read” list. There are a million books out there where a man-whore meets his game-changer, but this one does it well.” ~ Panglette, Amazon Review

“Best Rachael Wade novel to date.” ~ Cathy Givans, Amazon Review

Book Description: Love, life, and happily ever after? It’s all relative. Marine biology student Emma Pierce lives in paradise—geographically speaking, anyway. Trying to heal from the loss of her sister and a failed relationship she rerouted her life for, she’s ready to graduate and finally leave Florida behind.

When a run-in with Jackson and his rowdy crew goes sour at the bar one night, sparks fly and irreversible damage is done. It’s no secret that Jackson loves to get underneath her skin, but this time he’s gone too far. Now all he wants is to earn her forgiveness before she’s gone for good, but their ideas of closure—and the future—are enough to keep them worlds apart.… Read more on Amazon.

Sex in YA Novels

The Breeders (Young Adult Dystopian)
Young Adult Dystopian
Guest post by guest post by Katie French author of the YA book The Breeders.

Sex in YA Novels

Let’s not beat around the bush. Fifty Shades of Gray and all its replicas have made everyone hot and bothered. The erotica trend has hit the mainstream and everyone’s blood is pumping. Unfortunately folks in the industry are now scrambling to capitalize. One influential man who runs a website devoted to mentoring new authors told a writer friend of mine to sex up her Young Adult male protagonist. She cringed.
“It’s for teens,” she bemoaned.
He replied, “Hey, there’s sex in YA now.”
And that one statement frightens me to no end.
Now, I know that there are plenty of books with teen sex in them. There have been for a while and I don’t see that trend ending. Most of them are the edgy, coming-of-age stories that show the gritty realities of the world in which we live. Myself and my friends write fantasy and science fiction, a genre that, in the past, has shied away from sex scenes. There is usually kissing. Someone may get to second base, but that’s it. It’s a genre that’s innocent in a way. And that is how I like it.
If the new trend is every book must focus on sex in order to sell, I cringe at what we’ll be reading. Imagine Katniss in a sex scene or Thomas from The Maze Runner taking a break from running for his life to have a quicky. All those great scenes building worlds and racing from enemies will be rushed out of the way to get to the hot and heavy. And what will all this sex do to our teen readers? Aren’t they over-sexed as it is thanks to Barbie and MTV?
Hopefully writers will take a stand and fight back against the onslaught of sex seeping into our literature. I’ve always believed in avoiding trends and sticking to what you love. For me, I love a great romance, a push and pull until the final moment where the heroine and her love interest kiss for the first time. There’s something magical about that moment. And for me, that’s enough.
Katie French imagined herself an author when her poem caught the eye of her second grade teacher. In middle school she spent her free time locked in her room, writing her first young adult novel. Though her social life suffered, her love for literature thrived. She studied English at Eastern Michigan University, where she veered from writing and earned an education degree. She spent nine years teaching high school English. Currently she is a school counselor, doing a job that is both one of the hardest things she’s ever done and the most rewarding. In her free time she writes, reads great books and takes care of her two beautiful and crazy children. She is a contributor and co-creator of Underground Book Reviews, a website dedicated to erasing the boundaries between traditional and non-traditional publishing. She lives in Michigan with her husband and two children. You can find her at www.katiefrenchbooks.com, at www.undergroundbookreviews.com or onFacebook.

Author Interview #154: Somewhere My Love by Beth Trissel

SOMEWHERE MY LOVE (Somewhere In Time)Our interview today is with Beth Trissel author of Somewhere My Love (4.4 stars, 36 reviews). Before we get to the interview a brief book description: Fated lovers have a rare chance to reclaim the love cruelly denied them in the past, but can they grasp this brief window in time before it’s too late? Two hundred years ago Captain Cole Wentworth, the master of an elegant Virginian home, was murdered in his chamber where his portrait still hangs. Presently the estate is a family owned museum run by Will Wentworth, a man so uncannily identical to his ancestor that spirit-sensitive tour guide Julia Morrow has trouble recognizing Cole and Will as separate. As Julia begins to remember the events of Cole’s death, she must convince Will that history is repeating, and this time he has the starring role in the tragedy. The blade is about to fall.

Interview with Beth Trissel

1) What was the inspiration behind your award-winning paranormal romance novel, Somewhere My Love? Several sources of inspiration lie behind this novel. First ghosts, and Virginia has more ghost stories than any other state in the Union, not necessarily because we have a more fertile imagination, but sadly because the Old Dominion has seen more bloody battles over the centuries than any other. And yet, this multitude of hauntings doesn’t only feature soldiers caught in an endless fray who haven’t gotten word the war’s over. Many tales feature the myriad of people, great and small, who dwelt in our richly historic state. The old Virginia homes and plantations have accumulated a wealth of such stories. While touring some of these English styled manor homes with my dear mother I conceived the idea for Somewhere My Love. But there’s more to it than that.
2) Thought there might be. Can you elaborate? I was also influenced by one of my favorite British TV mysteries, Midsomer Murders. I enjoy the historic setting of these modern day mysteries, but especially when the story flashes back to an even earlier time. So I thought, why not incorporate that with my love of romance and history. Story ideas sometimes come from the most unlikely sources.
3) Yes, they do. I understand your family home place has influenced your work? Greatly, and not only in this novel. On my father’s side, I descend from old Southern gentry, now impoverished after the Civil War, Great Depression, and various other misfortunes, but the gracious Georgian home his ancestor built (circa 1816) still stands outside the historic town of Staunton, VA. I grew up visiting this old home, called ‘Chapel Hill’–all Southern homes have names–and it’s strongly influenced my writing.

Antiquitypunk: Modern-like Technology Created During Ancient Times

Schisms (Red World)Our guest blogger is V.A. Jeffrey author of several books including Schisms (Red World)
Now that I’ve gotten the first story of this trilogy out of the way I wanted to revisit the idea of antiquitypunk: modern-like technology created during ancient times. However antiquitypunk is really a veneer over the actual story’s concepts. The real concepts run deeper and explore issues of Right and Wrong, religion, valor and forthrightness versus hypocrisy and corruption, belief and the role of technology. I’ve found a way to add this idea into the fabric of the story and I will explore it further in the next two books. One of the huge influences on the story is Frank Herbert’s Dune and in that book one of the major issues brought up in the saga is the problem of technology. How it is abused and eventually banned by society through the Butlerian Jihad:
Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a man’s mind.”
Thou shalt not disfigure the soul.”
The ban is nearly fanatically religious in nature. I wrote a similar concept in my own book, where the story takes place after the fall of the great kingdom of Hybron and the destruction of its capital. Hybron under the Red Kings was technologically advanced while still retaining many ancient, traditional ways. After the Destruction, tech is banned for the terrible problems imposed on society, resulting from greed and power and I plan to explore this time in Hybron’s history further.
In a time of water wheels, sundials and water clocks and uses of animals for transportation how do you explain surgery, cyborgs, star stations, giant floating air machines and genetic mutations of animals and humans such as animal-human hybrids? What would these things look like and how would they work? During the height of Hybron’s glory people and animals are eventually used and abused by these experiments and some try to use the air machines as a means for military weaponry, like spreading toxic poisons or dusts in the air over enemy lands. These things contribute to the ban on advanced tech in certain lands on the planet.
I think it brings up the question: how do we use technology in a way that does not abuse one’s fellow? Difficult since in real life technology is often used to abuse or harm others as well as help them. How does society deal with it? i suppose the core question is the nature of Man himself. Anything can be used to corrupt and harm others if the ones using it have ill intent. Motivations of the heart, I suppose, are the real issue and how technology is used comes out of that soup.
There will be an important plot point that is related to one of the themes in the story that surrounds this very idea and it has to do with the kinds of people forced to serve in certain kinds of slavery. Slavery is another issue in the books that I will be tackling because it is closely tied with the problem of technology use in the story.
Anyway, please forgive the rambling. I am thinking out loud here.

How To Commit The Perfect Murder: Read No Evil

Black Water Tales: The Secret KeepersOur guest blogger is JeanNicole Rivers author of Black Water Tales.

How To Commit The Perfect Murder: Read No Evil

Sometimes I sit alone in a dark room and I wonder how to commit the perfect murder…not really (in most of my down time I think about cupcakes, shopping lists and how to avoid my personal trainer), but for the sake of this blog, let’s just say that I do contemplate how to commit the perfect murder. Many years ago I would have had to look at old criminal case files, talk to detectives and police officers, use two or three tablets of paper for planning, but no more. Today I can go to my computer, type the phrase into my search bar and up pops a book telling me exactly what I need to know. It’s there; the question is, should it be?
Books that detail adverse or illegal actions should not be banned or censored simply because they do so.
It’s not against the law to write about adverse or illegal things. I have a right to read whatever I please so long as it does not violate the rights of others and me reading words on a page does not violate the rights of anyone.
There are many reasons, other than planning to commit a crime, that I could be reading such a book. A book on how to highjack a plane may come in handy if I am writing a fast paced thriller about a retired FBI agent forced to return to the deadly occupation he had grown to despise when a plane that he is on is suddenly taken over by terrorists (I’m not, feel free to run with that.). I may want a book on how to commit the perfect murder if I was a woman in a soured marriage to an ingenious and ruthless man and I want to be vigilant in my own protection.
Books do not make people do bad things; people do bad things because they want to do bad things. Sure, sometimes books are used as a tool for these actions but that does not mean that the book should be banned any more than scissors should be banned because someone uses them to commit a crime or any more than bridges should be banned because people jump off of them.
The censorship or banning of books is not a noble deed done by the forces that be to rescue people from the evil of others, it is a misguided act that works to strip people of one of their most valuable assets, education. By using the censorship or banning of books to solve problems as a society we aim only to treat the symptoms of a problem and ignore the search for a cure.
Violence begins not with words pages but with images in mirrors. Ultimately, the banning and censorship of books will not save you from the evil of anyone else, for where there is an evil will, there is an evil way, but it may keep you from saving yourself.

Three Exciting New Book Releases For January 2013

We are highlighting three exciting New Book Releases for January 2013 (click to see all the new releases). If you are looking for something new to read this is a great place to start.
Beauty RisingBeauty Rising by Mark W. Sasse. ”My heart sank. I dumped my father’s ashes in the heart of communist Vietnam – over a thousand miles from the death of his comrades – over a thousand miles from the smile of that girl. How could I have been so stupid?” Only the bumbling, overweight, thirtyish, stay-at-home Martin Kinney could have mistakenly flubbed his dying father’s request with such gusto. This thousand mile mistake awakens the ghosts of long-held family secrets and puts Martin on a fateful course with an unlikely romantic interest – a young, beautiful, yet troubled Vietnamese woman named My Phuong. With its cross-cultural setting and unlikely romance, the 61,000 word novel Beauty Rising creates a powerful, unique voice in today’s literature. Read more on Amazon.
Long Walk To The SunLong Walk To The Sun by William Peter Grasso. In this alternate history adventure set in WW2’s early days, a crippled US military struggles to defend vulnerable Australia against the unstoppable Japanese forces. When a Japanese regiment lands on Australia’s desolate and undefended Cape York Peninsula, Jock Miles, a US Army captain disgraced despite heroic actions at Pearl Harbor, is ordered to locate the enemy’s elusive command post. Conceived in politics rather than sound tactics, the futile mission is a “show of faith” by the American war leaders meant to do little more than bolster their flagging Australian ally. For Jock Miles and the men of his patrol, it’s a death sentence: their enemy is superior in men, material, firepower, and combat experience. Even if the Japanese don’t kill them, the vast distances they must cover on foot in the treacherous natural realm of Cape York just might. When Jock joins forces with Jillian Forbes, an indomitable woman with her own checkered past who refused to evacuate in the face of the Japanese threat, the dim prospects of the Allied war effort begin to brighten in surprising ways. Free Souls (Book Three of the Mindjack Trilogy)Free Souls (Book Three of the Mindjack Trilogy) by Susan Kaye Quinn. When your mind is a weapon, freedom comes at a price. Four months have passed since Kira left home to join Julian’s Jacker Freedom Alliance, but the hole in her heart still whistles empty where her boyfriend Raf used to be. She fills it with weapons training, JFA patrols, and an obsessive hunt for FBI agent Kestrel, ignoring Julian’s worries about her safety and repeated attempts to recruit her for his revolutionary chat-casts. When anti-jacker politician Vellus surrounds Jackertown with the National Guard, Kira discovers there’s more to Julian’s concerns than she knew, but she’s forced to take on a mission that neither want and that might be her last: assassinating Senator Vellus before he can snuff out Julian’s revolution and the jackers she’s come to love. Author Interview #153: Choice Cuts by Joe Clifford

Choice CutsOur interview today is with Joe Clifford author of Choice Cuts (5.0 stars, 37 reviews). Before we get to the interview a brief book description: Clifford’s debut short story collection Choice Cuts mines the fractured territory of the marginalized, misanthropic, and short-changed. From morally bereft television producers desperate for a hit, to veterans suffering psychotic splits, Clifford delves into the madness and desperation that plague those living on the edge, while never surrendering the search for the light that guides us all. In these fast-paced, hard-hitting tales of ne’er-do-wells, addicts, and gangsters, two predominant themes emerge throughout the collection: human life frequently reduced to little more than pieces of meat, and the bad choices we often make to escape that fate, however good our intentions.

Interview with Joe Clifford

Your short story collection is called Choice Cuts. Why that title? Is there a common thread tying it all together? The challenge with any collection is how does it hold together, as a whole. I come from a rock ’n’ roll background. It’s not much different from putting an album together. You can have some kick-ass songs that you end up leaving off because they don’t gel with the rest of the tracks. Each song—or story—tells a bigger story. When I was assembling Choice Cuts, I had a lot of individual pieces to choose from, and many really good selections were left off because they simply didn’t fit with the overall arching theme.
What is that theme? Well, it’s in the title CChoice Cuts. Every story in there references “meat,” however loosely defined, either in terms of setting, imagery, human life being nothing but pieces of. etc. It felt like a very apropos title given the subject matter.
What is that subject matter? Do you draw your conflict from real-life predicaments? To what extent are they based on yourself or someone you know? I am not a cheery person. I don’t know many writers who are. That’s not to say I am terribly morose or depressing. I simply mean that writers, at least the ones I know, focus on parts that can go wrong. I suppose that isn’t a surprise. “And they loved each other very much and nothing ever went wrong” doesn’t make a very compelling story. Also I tend to work in the hardboiled genre, which amplifies this edict, ten fold.
The second half of that question, to what extent do I draw on real people—I’d say quite a bit. In the 1990’s I had a pretty bad drug problem, and most of my milieu draws on that experience, for better or worse. Even when I am not tapping that well, I end to use real people as inspiration. My friend “Jimmy” appears frequently in the collection. First name. Last name. His plot ideas (credit where credit is due; “Red Pistachios” and “Tripping for Biscuits” couldn’t have been written without Jimmy). In fact, speaking of “Red Pistachios,” that piece is based on a former professor I had. I use his name, straight up. With permission, of course. I find it helps if I can picture someone in my head when I am writing. In the case of “RP,” the inspiration is nothing like the character outside of name. But simply attaching a name with a face helps me propel the narrative.

Give Yourself Permission To Say Yes

Live Life For A Living: An Inspirational Guide To Help Turn Dreams Into RealityOur guest blogger is Lynnette Rozine Prock author of several books including Live Life for a Living.

Give Yourself Permission To Say Yes

We all have creative ideas. We dream of writing novels, or playing sold-out shows in huge arenas. Or maybe we just dream of a entire day, filled with friends and family. Everyone is smiling, laughing, or hugging. We all have those types of thoughts that make our hearts swell with excitement. There really is no lack to anyone’s imagination, regardless of how creative you think you aren’t. It is in you. The inspired thought exists in every single being. We all have thoughts.
Where most people lack in fulfilling meaningful dreams, is the follow through. We have the idea and then instantly think of one thousand reasons why that can’t or won’t happen. “Yea, but…” or even “Yea, right!” thoughts immediately come to mind. Why is that? What is stopping us from giving ourselves permission to say “Yes!”?
This is not necessarily a conversation about saying yes to the entire big thing, the dream, the creative idea. But rather about stopping the NO that immediately comes up after the inspired thought. Even giving ourselves a solid “maybe” is stronger than simply giving up. Because, that’s what it is. When we allow our mind to listen to the “Yea, but…” or the “Yea, right!” statements, we give up on our creative dreams. There is not a chance in the world for a dream to exist if it isn’t first given permission.
We must give ourselves permission to say “Huh. That’s a pretty good idea!” and “Yea, I’m willing to try that!” Practice saying Yes! on a regular basis to experience the magic of the law of attraction. I’m curious to hear your stories about how amazing opportunities have suddenly opened up for you. Let’s have that conversation over on the My Dreams Matter Facebook page. Shall we? YES!
