If I Had The Spine To Get A Tatoo or The Girl With The Book Tatoo

If I Had The Spine To Get A Tatoo or The Girl With The Book Tatoo

My body does not have any ink on it.
Of course the question always is……
What kind of image would you get if you were to get a tatoo? (say this 3 times fast and it almost sounds like a Dr. Seuss book.)
I have a cousin who has been collecting tat’s for 50+ years. The real question will he run out of skin space before he dies.
I have a friend who has his wife and kids name on his calf. He is up to 6 kids. I wonder if his calf will be long enough if he has child number 7.
Most of us all know a person or two that has just one tatoo. This is kind of like saying I did a parachute jump once in my life just so you could get the T-shirt.
A tatoo with a stack of books would surely indicate my love of books.
I am not a big fan of pain. So I think I will stay with the tatoo that washes off with water.
Would you get a tatoo of your favorite book or author?

Book Buzz: A Soul To Steal by Rob Blackwell: 4.7 Stars, 88 Reviews

A Soul To Steal (The Sanheim Chronicles)A Soul To Steal, by Rob Blackwell, has both the twists and turns of a clever whodunit and the edginess of a supernatural thriller. “It’s a fast-paced, heart-stopping page-turner, made even more realistic by the author’s familiarity with Northern Virginia, ghost-lore, and the journalism trade. It’s a must-read for anyone up for a suspenseful mystery – you won’t be able to put down your e-reader until you get to the last gripping page.” ~ Jennifer Walke, Amazon Review

Author Interview: Gale Martin: Don Juan in Hankey, PA: 4.7 Stars, 42 Reviews

Don Juan in Hankey, PAOur interview today is with Gale Martin the author of Don Juan in Hankey, PA (rated 4.7 stars, 42 reviews). Before we get to the interview a brief book description: A socialite, a retired dermatologist, a hometown opera singer, and a bipolar ketchup heiress have dreams of turning the Hankey Opera House into Lincoln Center on the Schuylkill River. The reality is that the Hankey Opera Company stands on the brink of financial ruin. They think mounting an ambitious production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, a popular opera about history’s most legendary womanizer, will solve their problems. It only compounds them. Read more on Amazon.

Interview with Gale Martin

What is the significance of the title?
Don Juan in Hankey, PAis a modern retelling of the classic Don Juan legend about history’s most famous lover, set in a small Pennsylvania town. It’s a humorous backstage novel that combines the gothic and comic elements of Mozart’s Don Giovanni—the classic opera about the last two days of Don Juan’s life. When the Hankey Opera Guild decides to produce Don Giovanni to raise money for their failing opera company, intrigue and comic misadventures ensue.
How much of the book is based on real people you’ve come across in real life?
Most of the people in the book are composites. These characters include shards of real-life folks pre-dating a later interest in opera. People who intrigue me or infuriate me stay with me the most. For instance, while I was attending a writing conference in New York, I was fascinated by this middle-aged woman having a rainbow assortment of pills for breakfast – I was having oatmeal and OJ. That incident stayed with me, so that’s why it’s in the book.
I’ve never served on an opera guild, but I did spend a few miserable years on a community theater board and a few other non-profit boards, experiences which haunted me for decades like a bad tooth that’s eventually yanked but only after causing you a lot of suffering. On community theater boards, there are always performers there because they are jockeying for bigger roles in future productions. As far as my characters go, usually there are pieces, sometimes even great chunks of real people I’ve met. Vivian was inspired by one such (annoying) person and began less sympathetically than she is drawn now. Deanna is every small-town female board chair I’ve known all rolled into one person.
Do you think you succeeded?

The Effect of Dementia on Writing

The Sun ZebraA guest blog post by Rolando Garcia author of The Sun Zebra (4.8 stars on 44 reviews).

The Effect of Dementia on Writing

A group of scientists wanted to investigate whether they could find linguistic markers for dementia by evaluating the work of writers afflicted by this condition. To do this they studied the novels of three writers: Iris Murdoch, Agatha Christie, and P.D. James.
Iris Murdoch, who was a notable British writer, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease after writing her last novel “Jackson’s Dilemma.” This novel disappointed many people who found it very different from her earlier work. It was only later that it was realized she wrote it at a time that the disease was disrupting her cognitive abilities.
Agatha Christie, the best-selling novelist of all time, was suspected of senility and possibly Alzheimer’s disease towards the end of her life but she was never diagnosed.
The English crime writer, P. D. James, was included in the analysis as a healthy control who aged normally.
The scientists analyzed the complete text of 15-20 novels by each author evaluating lexical and syntactic markers with computer programs. Their analysis of the results is highly technical and involves a lot of nuances related to the methods they employed and the variability they encountered. I will just report here their major findings.

Author Interview: Cheryl Bradshaw: Black Diamond Death (Sloane Monroe Series)

Black Diamond Death (A Sloane Monroe Novel, Book One)Our interview today is with author Cheryl Bradshaw the author of the Sloane Monroe mystery series (Black Diamond Death, Sinnerman, I Have a Secret). The fourth book in the series Stranger in Town is set to be released in fall of 2012.

Author interview with Cheryl Bradshaw

What was unique about the setting of the book and how did it enhance or take away from the story?
The first two books in my Sloane Monroe series take place in Park City, Utah. I used Park City because it’s unique, and a place not often used in writing.
What specific themes did the author emphasize throughout the novel? What do you think he or she is trying to get across to the reader?
I wanted my main character, Sloane Monroe, to be relatable to readers; therefore, she had to be flawed, she needed to seem real. And she does. She suffers from OCD and commitment issues among other things. She stands for what is right and makes hard decisions every day. And she gets herself into positions that aren’t easy to get out of. I wanted to allow readers the chance to escape with her as they read the story while relating to her at the same time.
Do the characters seem real and believable? Can you relate to their predicaments? To what extent do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?
When I first started writing the series, many people who knew me well said Sloane was me. I used some of my own experiences to create her initially, but as I continue writing the series, she has become more and more her own person. She has flaws I don’t have, problems I don’t have. She reminds me of myself when I think about how she feels, but not in how she lives.
How do characters change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events trigger such changes?
Sloane always learns or grows in some way in each book. She surprises herself and makes decisions that maybe at the beginning of the story she wouldn’t have made.
In what ways do the events in the books reveal evidence of the author’s world view?
Sloane stands for justice and never gives up. I find myself at times telling others this same thing. She’s tough, sassy, smart, and views the world as a place where it’s her duty to capture the bad guy and put him away. This is what she lives for—to see justice served. In ways, I see the world the very same way.
Did certain parts of the book make you uncomfortable?

Author Interview: S. Boyd Taylor author of Teddy Bears and Tea Parties: A Horror Story

Teddy Bears and Tea Parties: A Horror StoryOur interview today is with S. Boyd Taylor and his book Teddy Bears and Tea Parties: A Horror Story. The book is FREE 6/23 – 6/27. A brief book description: Enter a fairy tale gone terrifyingly wrong: magic has come back, and now the world is alive — teddy bears, houses, swing sets — everything. And everything that lives must eat. A creepy little girl with a knife struggles to rescue her sister, Angie, from the teddy bears they both used to love. Can she find her sister? And can she defeat Hymn, the strange creature that the teddy bears serve?

Interview with S. Boyd Taylor

What was unique about the setting of the book and how did it enhance or take away from the story?
Regarding my current eBook for “Teddy Bears and Tea Parties: A Horror Story” (available here: http://www.amazon.com/Teddy-Bears-Tea-Parties-ebook/dp/B005H5AI5U ) — the setting, in my opinion, is the lead character in the piece.
It’s a world where “magic” has come back to modern day suburban America – magic as in old-school animism, where everything is alive. And everything that is alive must eat, so you get swing sets and teddy bears trying to eat people. Houses that have to be fed to be safe. Picture frames with your mom’s photo in them that try to bite your fingers off, stuff like that.
What specific themes did the author emphasize throughout the novel? What do you think he or she is trying to get across to the reader?
Well, I was trying to convey how empty and starving the world has become. How everyone is so disconnected, so distant from each other. You go out to eat with your friends just so you have a couple of moments to talk to them, and you leave and you’re hungry again – not because of lack of food, because of lack of time with your people. This is the silent desperation and suffering of America.
Do the characters seem real and believable? Can you relate to their predicaments? To what extent do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?
The main character, Little Girl, is someone who has been pushed too far. She’s gotten mean and hard because that’s what it takes to survive, and it takes all her work not to give up and cry. The house she grew up in ate her parents, the teddy bears she used to cuddle at night stole her sister, and she has had enough. Angie, the sister, is someone who has gone to the other extreme – someone who has surrendered, stopped fighting, and just wants to give in. But Little Girl is going to save her somehow.
In what ways do the events in the books reveal evidence of the author’s world view?

Dr. Seuss Knows Best

The Dog PrinceA guest post from author Fun London and the book The Dog Prince. Their blog is Tales from Fun London.

Dr. Seuss Knows Best

Jean-Paul Sartre: But on the other hand, it helps people to understand that reality alone counts, and that dreams, expectations and hopes only serve to define a man as a broken dream, aborted hopes, and futile expectations. Dr. Seuss:Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.

Sigmund Freud: We are never so defenseless against suffering as when we love. Dr. Seuss: You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.

Friedrich Nietzsche: What labels me, negates me. Dr. Seuss: Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.

Werner Herzog: In the face of the obscene, explicit malice of the jungle, which lacks only dinosaurs as punctuation, I feel like a half-finished, poorly expressed sentence in a cheap novel. Dr. Seuss: A person’s a person, no matter how small.

Albert Camus: The question is that of knowing whether two and two do make four. Dr. Seuss: Oh, the THINKS you can think up if only you try!
Three cheers for the simplicity and wisdom of Dr. Seuss!

Book Buzz: Sunset: Pact Arcanum by Arshad Ahsanuddin: A Vampire Thriller

Sunset (Pact Arcanum)“This was a well written futuristic novel about Nightwalker vampires, Daywalker vampires, and Sentinel races, and the aftermath resulting in their exposure to the human world, after millennia of walking around virtually undetected. ~ Lily, Amazon Review
Hello Digital Book Today readers. The Book Buzz segment today features Sunset (Pact Arcanum, bk #1) by Arshad Ahsanuddin which is currently rated 4.1 stars on 15 reviews. Sunset (Pact Arcanum) is described as book one of the gay vampire Pact Arcanum but it so much more than just “another vampire” story. It is set in the year 2040 and includes shifters, protectors, justice fighters, advanced technology, and a thriller all rolled into one with a science fiction backdrop. A large combination that Arshad expertly weaves into a story that the reader of the vampire genre will throughly enjoy especially if you are bored with the “same old” vampire books. We think that Sunset (Pact Arcanum) will leave the reader wanting for more after they are finished with this novel. Click here to see books 1-4.
“One of the best written vampire novels I have read in quite a while. Ahsanuddin has created his own world in an overused genre without the reader feeling like they are reading an overused genre. This “first” in the series jumps right into this world feet first and never lets up on the reader.” ~ Albert Robbins III, Amazon Review
“It has some sci-fi, romance, vamps and meta humans. But I know one thing, it is a hell of a good read! Be prepared to follow this through to the end. ~ Nicole R. Peterson, Amazan Review
Book Description: Los Angeles, 2040. The terrorist Medusa and her followers threaten to destroy the metropolis with a nuclear bomb. One individual, the vampire Nicholas Jameson, comes forward to oppose them. As Nick takes on the terrorists, the fragile peace between the races hangs perilously in the balance as the supernatural peoples are exposed.
Arshad Ahsanuddin is a hematopathologist. The irony of a physician who specializes in blood disease writing a series of vampire novels is not lost upon him..… Read more on Amazon.

Spelling Errors in Books

ZemstaOur guest blog post today is Victoria Brown author of Zemstra. Click here to visit Victoria’s blog.

Errata Gone Wild

We all know the bane of indie authors is that nothing is proofed properly, and self-published books are rife with typos. Or that’s what everyone seems to think.
According to Virginia Heffernan in the New York Times (http://nyti.ms/qUMMOk): “For readers who find humanity in orthographic quirks, these are great times. Book publishers used to struggle mightily to conceal an author’s errors; publishers existed to hide those mistakes, some might say. But lately the vigilance of even the great houses has flagged, and typos are everywhere. Curious readers now get regular glimpses of raw and frank and interesting mistakes that give us access to unedited minds. Lately, in a big new memoir from a fancy imprint, I came across “peddle” for “pedal.” How did it happen?
“Editors I spoke to confirmed my guesses. Before digital technology unsettled both the economics and the routines of book publishing, they explained, most publishers employed battalions of full-time copy editors and proofreaders to filter out an author’s mistakes. Now, they are gone.”
Here are some interesting typos I came upon while trawling the web:
• In the book Probing the Mind of a Serial Killer the topic matter is serial killers. Whenever the author referenced sexual sadists it was “sexual saddest.” This was repeated over and over and over.
• In Sam de Britto’s Lost Boys: “The flour of us got in the car…”
• In Outlaw Embrace: “Working undercover during a train holdup, the last thing he needs is a beautiful southern belle to protect. But when his viscous brother sets designs on Anastasia Hamilton, he’s forced to claim her as his own.”
• Not sure where this one came from: “She curled up on the couch hoping to find solstice.”
• A newspaper’s sports section reporting on a basketball player’s injuries: “He had a herniated disk…but they used a “c” instead of an “s” in disk.
• Published in a church bulletin: “Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM. Prayer and medication to follow.”
• In a novel, the heroine is preparing a grenade and shouts, “Fire in the whole!” to her team.
• In Trevor Scott’s Burst of Sound: “They moved onto the wooden dock where the fairy had docked the day before, saving Tony the long drive.”
• In one of Kim Harrison’s Hollow books, every time they mention the brakes on a car, it’s spelled “breaks,” except when the brake line breaks and then it’s reversed so the break line brakes.
• In “The Pasta Bible” a recipe calls for “freshly ground black people.”
What are your favorite typos?

Book Buzz: Blood Money by Laura Rizio: A Disturbing Depiction of a System Gone Wrong

Blood Money“In her exciting debut, personal injury attorney, Rizio, crafts a legal thriller with compelling characters and tense action that more than compensate for a familiar premise. An appealing tart cynicism haunts the novel’s scenes. For a debut, Rizio’s novel is remarkably accomplished. An entertaining thriller full of clever touches, whose characters and tone enliven an overworked genre.” ~ Rebecca Cramer Kirkus Indie — Kirkus LLC

Hello Digital Book Today readers. Our Book Buzz segment today features attorney and author Laura Rizio with her book Blood Money. If you are interested in legal thrillers then Blood Money could be the perfect choice as it is rated 4.2 stars on 46 reviews which indicates this book has been enjoyed by readers. Working in the justice system on a day to day basis allows Laura to be exposed to a lot of potential story ideas along with having the legal knowledge to add as background into her story. Follow this link to read an interview with Laura Rizio.

“Rizio offers up everything you want out of a legal, suspense novel. Engaging characters, gripping plot, and pure entertainment. Best attribute? Its quality writing –thoughtful attention to detail like character building and coloring the cynical and hardened legal world separate this novel from lesser entries in the genre.” ~ Moma2012, Amazon Review

“This is a book which you will finish in one reading and you will never think of the American justice the same as before the read. This is an inside view of the unpredictability of the jury system and the notion of justice is turned on its head. An inside view of corruption in the very system we have come to depend on.” ~ James A. Hamilton III, Amazon Review

Book Description:

When the firm discovers he knows, Nick’s only hope is to stay one step ahead of the hitman long enough to intentionally lose his case and expose the firm’s corruption. It’s part mob story, part detective story/psychological thriller, part love story, part coming of age story all rolled into one.” ~ Ruby Tuesday, Amazon Review

Book Description: There was only one rule in our neighborhood–never break an oath. But oaths are easy to take and damn hard to keep.
Now I’m staring at my best friend, lying on the floor in a pool of blood, my bullet in his gut. Where the hell did it go wrong?
To understand that you’d have to go back to the beginning, back to when the three of us ruled the neighborhood. ..… Read more on Amazon.
About the Author:
I live in Texas now, but I grew up in Cleland Heights, a mixed ethnic neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware that sat on the fringes of the Italian, Irish and Polish neighborhoods. The main characters of Murder Takes Time grew up in Cleland Heights and many of the scenes in the book were taken from real-life experiences.
Somehow I survived the transition to adulthood, but when my kids were young I left the Northeast and settled in Texas, where my wife suggested we get a few animals. I should have known better; we now have a full-blown animal sanctuary with rescues from all over. At last count we had 41 animals–12 dogs, a horse, a three-legged cat and 26 pigs.
Oh, and one crazy–and very large–wild boar, who takes walks with me every day and happens to also be my best buddy.
Since this is a bio some of you might wonder what I do. By day I am a headhunter, scouring the country for top talent to fill jobs in the biotech and medical device industry. In the evening I help my wife tend the animals, and at night–late at night–I turn into a writer.

“Murder Takes Time is such a book. It makes a great fast read that pulls you along and makes it hard to put down, but then you find yourself thinking about parts that come back again and again during other activities of the day. In summer I have time to indulge myself in that reflection–if a book has sufficient depth. And, this book does.” ~ Elizabeth V, Amazon review

Author Interview: Lee Chambers author of The Pineville Heist

The Pineville HeistOur author interview today is with writer/director Lee Chambers had his book The Pineville Heist. The screenplay version attracted Booboo Stewart (Seth Clearwater) from the Twilight movies for the lead in the motion picture slated to shoot this fall. A quick book description: Seventeen year old Aaron stumbles into the aftermath of a five million dollar bank heist gone wrong. Hiding under a canoe, Aaron partially catches the murder of one of the robbers. In the chaos he sneaks away with the money and heads straight for the closest place of safety, his high school. Terrified, Aaron tells his shocking tale to Amanda Becker, his drama teacher, but it doesn’t take long for one of the psychotic robbers to show up. In the locked down school the pair are relentlessly pursued in a quest to get the money back and wipe out the evidence.

Interview with Lee Chambers

1. What was unique about the setting of the book and how did it enhance or take away from the story?
My book started as a screenplay and is written directly from that. Tons of drafts and development.
2. What specific themes did you emphasize throughout the novel? What are you trying to get across to the reader?
There’s teen struggle to identity with parental figures. Battle against crooked authority.
3. Do the characters seem real and believable? Can you relate to their predicaments? To what extent do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?
Oh they are very real. Been living with them for over four years and I can still hear their thoughts. The screenplay version I co-wrote with Todd Gordon is still being tinkered with for cinematic effect. Heading into draft 23 and Todd and I know them all intimately.
4. How do characters change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events trigger such changes?
For my lead character taking the money away from the bad guys is one of the key turning points. Then, really seeing the danger that death is a possible outcome was the next. He needed to grow some balls and stand up or perish. Probably not a spoiler to say he grows balls.
5. In what ways do the events in the books reveal evidence of the author’s world view?

Book Buzz: Then I Invented The World by Stanley Herman: A Cosmic Comedy

Then I Invented the World (A Cosmic Comedy)“If you want complex philosophical ideas in a fun and easy read, then this book is a must. The author has a knack for ‘divine comedy’ which explores some of the big questions of Life. Reading the book reminded me of the ancient Greek dialogs put in modern and easy to read form.” ~ Ra Mon, Amazon Review

Hello Digital Book Today readers. Our Book Buzz segment today features author Stanley Herman and his book Then I Invented The World which is rated 4.9 stars on 12 reviews. A cosmic comedy? This is what you get when God and Lucifer decide to start using an online forum. A great way for these two characters to meet a whole world of people from all corners of life. Then I Invented The World does a terrific job in balancing “divine comedy” while exploring many of the real world issues of today with a varied cast of real world characters.

“Mr. Herman knows his religions, psychology and philosophy in depth, has a very dry sense of humor and shows a great appreciation of humanity and its foibles. A great read.” ~ Kip Winsett, Amazon Review

“God is very much alive in this lively discourse in which the author pulls off the difficult trick of walking a tightrope between comedy and cosmology, using each to balance the other. Perfect choice for book clubs because there is so much to think and talk about. A terrific reading experience.” ~ Tired of Being Ripped Off, Amazon Review

Book Description: Fanatical extremists, with a brilliant master plan, two big, dirty nukes, and a team of eager suicide bombers, plot a masterstroke of terror. Meanwhile, God is preoccupied in an online forum, chatting with a diverse group of human characters about his long simmering issues with humanity. The world’s best hope for survival is Legion, a cloned product of illegal Germline engineering, and perhaps God’s next prophet, unless he becomes Lucifer’s King of the World instead.
With God’s absence, Heaven is divided by internal dissension as its greatest general, the archangel Michael, and his colleague the archangel Uriel, plan a preemptive strike against Lucifer’s and his demons.

A startlingly credible “what-if” story that is as funny as it is exciting. Meet Lucifer, the slick yet sensitive leader of a bunch of misfit demons, in a hell that is crumbling from neglect, and his divine foes, archangels Michael and Uriel. Meet young Legion, the cloned billionaire industrialist who must choose between God’s authority and the devil’s temptations, including the irresistible Lilith—men go to bed early just so they can have bad dreams of her. And meet God, if that is who he really is, who needs to decide whether or not to just ditch this whole humanity thing and spend his time elsewhere. ..… Read more on Amazon.

“A creative, intelligent, and entertaining book! It opens up a whole new perspective and take on religion and the bible (of which I know very little!), bringing it into today’s world in a humorous, imaginative, yet believable way. It held my attention with the very human characterizations of God, biblical stories and characters.” ~ Elizabeth V, Amazon review
